Life Principle #1: Just Seek God!

The first life principle that we have marked for our life is found in Proverbs 2:1-6. It says: My son, if you will receive my words, and hide my commandments within you; so that you will incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; Yes, if you cry after knowledge, and lift up your voice for understanding; If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; Then shall you understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom: out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding (Adapted from KJV).

Here Solomon is telling the reader to diligently seek wisdom… and he explains that wisdom is the fear of the LORD and the knowledge of God (v.5). He tells us to seek wisdom like searching for silver. He adds, seek it as though you are looking for hidden treasures. Usually Biblical authors use this double emphasis when they want to draw our attention to their words. Solomon is telling us, seek wisdom like you seek silver. Not satisfied with that he says, no it is worth even more than silver, seek for wisdom as though you are looking for hidden treasures. Then he reminds us that wisdom is the fear of the LORD and the knowledge of God.

In Acts 17:11 we find the Bereans doing exactly what Solomon is teaching us here. We read, Now the Bereans… they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures everyday to see if what Paul said was true.

We are to do exactly what the Bereans did—just seek God. We seek God (a) when we spend personal time with God—searching out His word and conversing with Him in prayer and (b) when we spend corporate time with God—worshiping him with fellow believers. Indeed, the first and the foremost call of our life is to just seek God.
