Motives

It is so hard to examine your own heart and know your motives for your passions and ambitions. For example, if you want to become a political leader, the question to ask is why? Is it because you seek the fame? Is it because you want the power? Or is it because you want to serve the people? Often it is a combination of two or more... then the question haunts me. Is it OK to have multiple motives? Is it OK that you want to serve the people and also that you enjoy the attention that you get? Or do you need to get rid of one and keep the other?
I thought about it and I feel what is needed is honesty. It is good to be honest about your motives. If it is a combination of noble motives and quest for glory, it is good to be honest about it, and then to ask yourself, if I don't ever receive any glory from my work, will I still do it? If so, then I feel we can go ahead with surety of heart and a good conscience.
